Main Task: Research and Planning

Potential Ideas: Genre and Images                                                                             16/9/16
I wanted the genre of my magazine to be something unique and not mainstream. I initially wanted the aim of my music magazine to be to expose my readers to different music that I personally enjoyed. I came to conclusion that I wanted the genre of my music magazine to be focused on indie/alternative, it is a genre of music I personally enjoy widely and I wanted to expose my readers to this genre.

I then began thinking about what colour could I use to link to my chosen genre of my music magazine, so I began to come up with instant connotations of the genre. I then decided to ask my peers for assistance and asked them what colours came to mind when they thought of indie/alternative music. The results were that the majority of them thought of cool and calmer tones such as blues, teals, greens and purples. Using this information I used it to create a mood board which I created using ink and paint. The working title or masthead of my music magazine is 'Melody Manic'. This title could possibly change when it comes closer to the final product.

Music magazine mood board created in class

The majority of my images used on my mood board were taken by me (The photos of the crowd and close up of vinyls are not owned by me). I found this task quite easy because at home, I was already surrounded by a lot of musical objects or musically inspired things such as instruments, pillows and CD's. I enjoyed this task a lot because it included a photography aspect which is the area I aspire to become involved with but also because it was a very creative task. I used many close up shots of the guitar to reflect one of my magazine's main aims which is to reveal the true rawness and beauty behind music.

Flat Plan
                                                                                                                     23/9/16

I created a flat plan of the front cover of my music magazine. I wanted my layout look simple and organised because it fits the calm mood and atmosphere of the genre of my magazine. My flat plan will allow me to clearly layout my work. My front cover will be simplistic yet presented in a creative and unique way which will capture and attract my target audience.

Peer Assessment and Interview:
In this task we peer assessed each other's work so far. My peer assessor was Amber. I found this task very helpful as it allowed me and helped to find ways to improve my music magazine. I used the feed back I received from my peer in order to do this. The peer assessment task also allowed me to understand what I have done well in my work.

Magazine Cover Analysis                                                                             14/10/16
In this task I analysed two types of magazines, a music magazine called Q which is currently owned and produced by Bauer Media, my case study. I also analysed the front cover of Grazia which is also another product of Bauer Media but has a different genre which is celebrity/fashion. This task allowed me to deeply analyse two very different covers and to test my knowledge on the aspects in which make up the front cover of a magazine.

Music Press and Music Industry

In order to further develop my research and planning, I had to research the music press and the music industry to develop my understanding of the context behind my task. In this task I created a poster using canva which allowed me to use a more creative method of presenting my work. To create this poster I used my notes from class discussion explaining both the music press and industry which share a symbiotic relationship, meaning both parties gain from each other's work. The music industry is made up of the people who produce the music content, specifically the celebrities or music artists. The music press use these artists in order to produce their content or products such as magazines. For example, Kerrang uses artists such as Bring Me the Horizon (the music industry) in order to get exclusive information to distribute among the band's adoring fans. Without the music press the music industry's work would not get noticed and so would not thrive and vice versa.

Prezi Presentation - Music magazine cover analysis and magazine ideas      7/10/16
In this presentation includes a collection of my work and potential ideas for my own music magazine so far. It also includes three magazine analysis of the magazines Rolling Stone and Kerrang. Both are very popular and iconic music magazines.

Bauer and Media Institutions- 15/11/2016
This is one of the first essay tasks we have done for homework. In this task, I demonstrated the knowledge I have learnt from my lessons and from the independent research I have done about Bauer.

Kerrang Magazine and Bauer Media Presentation   18/10/16
I used the website Prezi in order to create my own presentation for information on Kerrang Magazine and its institution and current publisher Bauer Media. I find Prezi very easy and simple to use and I enjoyed using this because it allows me to structure and layout my work in a creative way. In my Prezi presentation, I have given some context and background on the Institution called Bauer Media and have also analysed three Kerrang covers, contents pages and double page spreads.

25/11/2016

During this lesson, I analysed one of Bauer's other popular magazine company called Q Magazine. Q magazine is also one of Bauer's most successful magazines. I analysed a front cover, a contents page and a double page spread. Q's house style include the colours red, white and black and these colours are represented throughout these three magazine pages. Each page ensures that it features a well known celebrity or music artist such as Ed Sheeran and Kanye West. This allows the magazine to capture such a wide audience as these people are so well known in the current music press. The layout of the double page spread ensures that the main image is the main focus on one side only, allowing the text to be the focus with the other half of the page.

Target Audiences: Magazines- 29/11/16
This lesson I analysed magazine covers, finding ways on how each cover relates to its target audience and how it attracts the target audience. I analysed three different genres of magazines and analysed their audiences and how they meet the needs of their audiences. I analysed the magazines Heat, Fashion and Popular Science. Each of them alternating in their genres. Heat is a celebrity based magazine which focuses on getting exclusive information in to every small detail in their lives. Heat is considered a voyeuristic magazine which means it makes the reader feel as though they are personally a part of the celebrities life. Fashion magazine is as expected, a fashion magazine. According to its cover lines, this magazine can be considered a magazine for older women who wish to rejuvenate themselves hence 'anti aging' cover lines. The mature presentation of the front cover suggests that the magazine is intended for an audience who have a higher income and can afford the high end products featured on the cover. The Popular Science magazine is more of a specialist or niche magazine and its main image of a very manly and masculine celebrity suggests the magazine's primary audience is for men. Its professional appearance suggests that the magazine's target audience are very serious science enthusiasts which could further suggest that the magazine is intended for men of a higher class.

Brand Identity: Magazines - 02/12/2016
This lesson I completed a breakdown of what makes a Brand's identity. I filled out each box, dispersing information in to four separate categories. I completed a sheet each for Closer, Grazia and my own magazine. Closer magazine is a celebrity focused magazine, similar to Heat magazine, it is a voyeuristic magazine. Grazia is more of a fashion magazine but also incorporates the celebrity aspect within their product which contributes to the success of the magazine as the audience tend to be interested in the lives of celebrities. I also completed a brand identity sheet for my own music magazine. This gave me a strong starting point.

05/12/2016

This lesson I completed another brand identity table sheet basing it on Heat magazine which is one of Bauer's other very successful magazines. I wrote in bullet points in each section breaking them down and using my knowledge in order to complete them. I also included audience demographics, specifically psycho-graphics. I also created a brand identity sheet for my own music magazine, This allowed me to split up my brand identity in to smaller parts, allowing more focus.

05/12/2016

In this lesson I also used the website survey monkey in order to create my own survey to connect with my audience and get to know them better. This was beneficial because it will allow me to understand my audience further thus allowing me to produce a magazine which will interest and satisfy my target audience.

09/12/2016

This lesson I used the website canva to create a poster for the Pros and Cons of my music magazine Melody Manic. I enjoyed using canva because it allows me to set out my work in a more creative way. I enjoy using a variety of platforms on my blog in order to present my work. I featured my own image from the previous photography task which is a close up of a guitar. This again reflects the aim of my music magazine which is to make the music the main focus of the magazine.

09/12/2016
I also used canva in order to create a plan for my own magazine. I created three flat plans for my front cover, contents page and double page spread and organised them in to three separate poster pages. The flat plans I have created have given me a basis for the layout of my magazine pages which I found very useful as I have been unsure on the ways in which to layout these specific pages.

Inspiration -                                                                                                                        19/12/2016

I spent this lesson searching for inspiration for how I want the front cover of my own music magazine to look like. As previously stated, I am aiming for a simple yet bold and creative front cover which will not reveal too much information but will still succeed in attracting my target audience. I came across magazines such as Fader and Indie. Each cover has a simple background which compliments the appearance and presence of the music artist featured. I collected my favourite and the most interesting front covers which share them image I am aiming for for my own magazine and placed them in  to a mini collage.

Cover-line Ideas - 13/01/2017
This lesson, I began to plan the contents of the front cover of my music magazine 'Melody Manic'. I came up with several potential ideas for the types of articles I intend to include on my front cover. I have chosen to use the main article, which is going to be focused on artist used on my front cover. The rest of the cover lines will be focused on other popular artists within the indie/alternative genre which will contribute to the attraction towards the magazine. The cover will also include pugs and puffs followed by articles titled, for example 'Top 20 songs'. This will also contribute towards the attraction toward the audience because the target audience will consist of people who want to be exposed to a wide variety of songs within the genre.
